Bees and Wasps Around the House: When to Ask for Help

Hi, I’m Gunhee Park with Anteater Pest Control (678-704-3349). Spring and summer flowers bring bees to the yard. A nest under an eave or beside the deck is another matter, especially when you are afraid to go near it.
One person wrote for help after seeing insects over the lawn and later indoors. A sting while mowing left them dizzy with a pounding heart. They then noticed a nest by a second-floor window. They had a small ladder but were afraid to approach and asked for someone to check it.
If a sting causes dizziness, faintness or trouble breathing, call 911. These can be signs of a serious allergic reaction.
First, identify the insect and understand where it is flying and nesting. Honey bees and wasps, including yellowjackets, need different responses. Honey bees can defend their nest, too. Have the activity assessed without approaching or disturbing the nest.
If honey bees settle inside siding or a wall, the job may involve more than the bees. Honey and comb left after a colony dies can stain walls and attract other pests. A professional qualified to remove honey bee colonies from buildings should assess the bees, comb and wall cavity.
A small ladder does not make an upstairs nest a safe job. Height, access and stings all need consideration. Protective clothing is only part of trained precautions, not a guarantee against injury. Avoid climbing up, spraying or opening the wall yourself.
Choose experienced help with the licensing and insurance appropriate to the work. Nest or comb removal should fit the species and location. Any pesticide use must follow its label and environmental precautions. Ask what follow-up and home care the findings call for.
It is understandable to hesitate after a sting. Getting the situation properly assessed is a better first step than taking a risk to reach the nest.
