Hi, I'm Gunhee Park with Anteater Pest Control (678-704-3349). When an unfamiliar insect turns up at home, you want to know what to do. Before choosing a treatment, look closely at the insect. Legs, wings, color and antennae can help distinguish pests that seem alike. A clear photo can help, too. Let's work through three homeowner questions.

Large ants and wood debris upstairs: carpenter ants?

A homeowner reported large dark ants and wood debris in an upstairs bathroom. Carpenter ants were a possibility, but without a photo the identification was uncertain. They excavate wood for nests rather than eat it. Confirm the insect and locate nesting activity before choosing control.

What about unused lumber and landscaping chips?

Unused lumber in a garage does not by itself prove termites are present. Check the wood, moisture and any pest evidence. Outdoors, remove wood debris near the home. Landscaping chips labeled "insect resistant" should not be assumed to protect the house from termites. Check the specific product's claims and supporting information.

Will silverfish follow me to the next home?

An apartment resident who moved from a colder region to a warm, humid one described recurring silverfish in the bathroom and closet. With another move ahead, the biggest worry was taking them along.

Silverfish favor damp places. Reduce excess moisture and use a dehumidifier where needed. Raise the upcoming move during an assessment so the advice addresses that concern. Sightings in a room do not establish that packed belongings are infested.

For persistent problems, choose an experienced professional with the appropriate license and insurance. An inspection should identify the pest and conditions before treatment. Ask about suitable follow-up and property care between visits. If a pesticide is needed, follow its label for the pest, site and precautions for people, pets and the environment.
