Caterpillars in the Yard and Inside Your Home

Hi, I'm Gunhee Park with Anteater Pest Control (678-704-3349). Watching caterpillars chew through your plants is worrying. Finding them on the porch and in different rooms can make it hard to relax at home. Before choosing a treatment, the first step is to identify the caterpillar and understand where it is active.
Caterpillars are the immature stage of butterflies or moths. Some can cause substantial leaf damage, but their feeding habits and activity differ by species and stage of growth. They do not all behave the same way or need the same response.
Note which plants have damaged leaves, where you see caterpillars and when they appear. Include indoor sightings when describing the problem. Nearby woods, a wooden house or a porch light may seem like an explanation, but those details alone do not establish the cause.
An inspection should connect the insect with the affected plants and the activity around your home. That helps determine whether treatment is needed and which areas need attention. Spraying every tree and shrub simply because caterpillars are present may be unnecessary.
If a pesticide is appropriate, use a product labeled for the identified pest and the plant or area being treated. Follow its directions and precautions for people, pets, plants and the surrounding environment. A product should never be assumed harmless to plants just because it controls insects.
For continuing damage or repeated indoor sightings, choose an experienced professional with the appropriate license and insurance for the work. Ask what the inspection found, what follow-up is needed and what you can do between visits.
If pests are making your Duluth home uncomfortable, contact Anteater Pest Control to discuss the next step.
