Round Holes in Your Porch or Deck? It May Be Carpenter Bees

Hi, I'm Gunhee Park with Anteater Pest Control (678-704-3349). A round hole in a wooden railing can look surprisingly neat. If bees are also appearing around the porch or deck, it is worth understanding what is happening before deciding how to deal with it.
Carpenter bees resemble bumblebees, but their nesting habits differ. Female carpenter bees bore into wood to make tunnels where they lay eggs and raise their young. They excavate the wood rather than eat it. Wooden porches, railings and decks can provide nesting sites.
The opening you see is only the entrance. A tunnel can continue along the wood beneath the surface, and existing tunnels may be reused. Repeated nesting and expansion over time can add to the damage. A single hole, however, does not tell you how much wood has been affected.
An inspection should identify the insect, check whether nesting is active and assess the condition of the wood. Those findings should guide any control and suitable repairs. Covering a visible opening with sealant alone should not be taken as proof that the problem is resolved.
If you need help, choose an experienced professional with the appropriate license and insurance. Ask what the inspection found, how the affected wood should be addressed and what maintenance or follow-up makes sense. Knowing why a step is recommended helps you look after your home between visits.
Any pesticide use must follow the product label for the pest and treatment site, including precautions for people, pets and the surrounding environment. The approach should fit the inspected conditions rather than assume every bee around the house needs the same response.
